new icons
This month was a lot of new things for me. A new job, a new phone number (for the first time since high school), and a new car (not just new to me)! Everything has been exciting with a touch of sadness too.

I’m blown away by the new job opportunity, but also a little bummed to be moving on from LEVEL. I learned and grew so much in the last six years. I can’t believe I got such a great job straight out of college, and then was placed on such an esteemed account. I worked with so many awesome people on a variety of challenging projects, and I was given so many opportunities that I never could have imagined getting. There’s been a lot of change in my life recently, which has been hard, but ultimately very good. I’m excited to see what develops in life next.

Everything’s Coming Up Milhouse!

26 Feb, 2014  |  7:21PM

I learned a couple things making this. 1) ‘Milhouse’ only has one ‘l.’ 2) 8-bit is fun but challenging. 3) I need to make the character a little bigger next time.

What I already knew that was part of the challenge, is that every pixel matters. I’m excited for the next project, whatever that may be!

A little while back I was working on some portfolio stuff that I still haven’t put on my site. I made a few devices so that I could show my work, because I hate how everyone just uses Apple products that they ripped off the site, and they don’t get the gloss look right, and I think it’s stupid. So I remade some devices to be a little more cartoon-like, and set up all the screens as smart objects so that I can switch content out easily.

I kept the Apple on the devices because they’re obviously Apple products, but this little project is neither licensed by or endorsed by Apple. I hope they achieve the balance of cute and cool that I was striving for. I only made them for specific projects, but perhaps at some point I’ll expand the lineup.

Beer. Process Animated Beer.

30 May, 2013  |  7:37AM

In my last post about beer titled “Beer. Wonderful Beer.” I promised a process animation to show a little bit of how I make these things. I know it’s not super in depth, but it’s at least a peek at what goes into making an icon. And also proves that I’m not just posting pictures of beer. Perhaps I’ll get better at creating process things as I go along.

Framed iOS Icon

29 Apr, 2013  |  11:32AM

I think this is the first time I’ve ever put something in the portfolio section of my site before I blogged about it. I probably should have posted this a while ago, but I forgot. So here it is! It’s an iOS style icon, that features some wood texture from scratch, and a watercolor of San Francisco that Katie painted for me a while back!

Beer. Wonderful Beer.

I don’t drink beer a lot, but it’s a nice thing to have every now and then. This beer isn’t very refreshing, but it was fun and challenging to make. Glass is never easy to pull off. I actually took some process shots as I went along, so I’ll put that together into an animated gif soon (hopefully).

Iron Man iOS App Style Icon

08 May, 2012  |  12:08AM

I just posted this on my dribbble and I’m really excited about it. I started out just making an icon in the style of an iOS app icon, and partway through decided to challenge myself to make it only using layer styles. I’ve seen a bunch of Iron Man icons, but never just his torso section, which I think is pretty visually interesting. So I present you with this icon, done completely using gradient fill and shape layers, gradient overlays, inner shadows, outer and inner glows, etc. Oh and if you want to actually download an icns file, you can do that here! Let me know what you think!
